World Cup trophy set for Kenya stop

Nairobi, Nov 6 (IANS): The FIFA World Cup trophy will make its stop in Kenya Nov 27 during its tour across 88 countries ahead of the 2014 edition in Brazil.

Although the East African nation has never qualified for the tournament, this will be the second occasion the trophy will be landing in Nairobi where it will be received by President Uhuru Kenyatta, reported Xinhua.

He will be the only person allowed to touch the iconic trophy with other fans viewing it up-close before it leaves for neighbouring Tanzania Nov 28.

The Trophy Tour which set off after a successful launch at the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, Brazil, will enter Africa Nov 14 through Egypt before making a 20-day tour across the continent.

It will visit Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa and then head back to Brazil Dec 6.

The cup came to Kenya for the first time in 2009 and it is undertaking the 267-day journey on a 40-passenger McDonnell Douglas 83 aircraft.
