Mangalore, Apr 4: The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) will celebrate the 43 National Maritime Day at Panambur on April 5.
Deputy Conservator Captain K V Vaswani said that the programme aimed to appraise the public about shipping and maritime activities.
It was on April 5, 1919, the first Indian steamship ‘Loyalty’ owned by Scindha Steam Navigation ventured into international waters on a voyage from Mumbai to UK. This marked the beginning of a new era in Indian shipping because till then the entire industry was dominated by the erstwhile imperial masters. Thus the day is observed as National Maritime Day.
The event will however bring about awareness among the public on the Indian shipping industry.
A programme will be held at NMPT A O building auditorium in Panambur will be inaugurated by IGP Western Range K S Suresh Baby on April 5. NMPT chairman P Tamilvanan will preside over the programme.
The New Mangalore Port will be kept open for the general public on Wednesday, April 5 from 3 pm to 6 pm. A radio talk on maritime education and training, road map for future by Captain S Nayak will be broadcast on Wednesday at 8.30 pm.
