Sydney, Nov 13 (IANS): England fast bowler Stuart Broad struck thrice on day one of the tour match against the Cricket Australia Invitational XI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here Wednesday.
Broad had figures of 3 for 36 from 20 overs, after carving through the hosts' top order to leave the hosts 5 for 170 at team. The home team recovered to end day at 271 for five with Ryan Carters scoring an unbeaten 94.
Former Australian Test opener Ed Cowan batted through the early carnage to score 51 before he was caught by England's Jonathan Trott off the bowling of Steve Finn (2/79).
Broad once again shaped as a danger man after he devastated Australia in the fourth Test of the last Ashes series in Durham.
In just the second over Broad, 27, had Invitational opener Aaron Finch edging behind for 4.
England won the toss and elected to put more work into the legs of their bowlers, including spinner Graeme Swann.
