Seven Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, Nov 13 (IANS): Seven Taliban militants were killed in a gun battle in Rigistan district of the southern Afghanistan province of Kandahar Wednesday, police said.

"A group of Taliban rebels stormed a police checkpoint in Rigistan district at 6 a.m. local time today and police returned fire killing seven attackers," Zia Dawrani, police spokesman in Kandahar province, told Xinhua.

One constable also sustained injuries in the gun battle that lasted for two hours, the official added.

He also said the Taliban militants crossed the border into Afghanistan after receiving training in Pakistan.

Afghan officials often accuse the Pakistan government of supporting Taliban militants, a claim rebuffed by Islamabad as groundless.
