Modi, BJP vitiating atmosphere with politics of negativism: PM

Jabalpur (MP), Nov 18 (PTI): In a frontal attack on Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today accused him and BJP of resorting to falsehood to target rivals and vitiating the atmosphere with their "politics of negativism and separatism".

The Prime Minister, who did not take the name of Modi and instead referred to him as BJP leader from Gujarat and "big BJP leader", said there were "several question marks" over the Gujarat model of development which the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate has been flagging in many of his election speeches.

"The BJP leader from Gujarat is always talking about the Gujarat model of development. But it is well known that several question marks were raised over the Gujarat model of development.

"The model need not work for the whole country. India is a very vast country where only one model of development could not work for all the regions," he said at the election meeting at the Wright Town stadium here.

Slamming the BJP, Singh said it has brought down the standard of political discourse and asked the people to "think seriously" what the party which believes in "demeaning others" will do to the country.

Taking potshots at Modi, he said the Gujarat leader had made "several goof-ups in matters relating to history".

"This showed what kind of a man he is," Singh said in the hard-hitting speech.

"In his zeal to malign others, a big BJP leader often resorts to falsehoods. He frequently distorts historical facts. Once in his enthusiasm to attack Congress, he misrepresented facts about a leader who is respected a lot in BJP," he said.

In its enthusiasm, BJP was only interested in levelling personal attacks on leaders from rival parties, he said.

"It is good for our democracy that political parties have enthusiasm. But it should be for constructive work. This should be used to tell people what good they will do if voted to power. It seems to me, though, that the enthusiasm of BJP leaders is all about condemning others," the Prime Minister said.

"In the last few months, we are seeing a lot of negative politics and the standard of political debate has gone down drastically," Singh said, accusing BJP of starting it all.

The Prime Minister said the saffron party needs to change its ideology. "BJP is practising politics of negativism and separatism. With this, it can never hope to usher in any kind of development. I think there is a need for the BJP to change its ideology," he said.

The Prime Minister noted that over the past few days the BJP had been praising several Congress leaders from the past. "It is a matter of happiness for my party. Such men were not only leaders of the Congress, but of the whole country," he said.

The Prime Minister said, "The BJP should never forget that it was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who had first imposed a ban on RSS for being allegedly involved in communal activities."

Asking the opposition to look at UPA's record before levelling allegations of lack of development under its rule, he said the country achieved record growth in last nine years.

He asked people to defeat Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh, saying the BJP-ruled state lags on several development indices like infant mortality, literacy among women and sex ratio.

"The condition of roads is very poor. Looking at these facts I am surprised that BJP leaders speak about its development," he said.

...Given poor crowds and the steady trickle towards the exit gates at the rally in south Delhi, the Congress number 2 was forced to keep his speech short.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her colleagues tried their best, but couldn't salvage the situation. "My dear sisters, at least listen to Rahulji before leaving," Ms Dikshit pleaded to the thinning crowd.

Congress media managers are worried as this is the second rally in the capital, after the one in Mangolpuri in north Delhi last month, in which their star speaker failed to draw in the crowds.

In many ways, Sunday's debacle is worse as it played out in what is supposed to be a Congress stronghold - Dakshinpuri, one of the hundreds of illegal colonies that were regularized over the years and given power and water connections, for which the Congress government takes credit.

All ads taken out by the Congress had said the Rahul Gandhi rally was to start at 10 am, but nearly two hours later, when the Congress vice president was to arrive, the crowd was thinner than the size of the police and media contingent.....

US Republican leaders have denied extending an invitation to Narendra Modi to address Congressional leaders and Indian-Americans via video link next week and accused a US-based supporter of the BJP's prime ministerial candidate of "misrepresenting" their party.

A Chicago-based Shalli Kumar, a supporter of Modi, has been served with a "cease and desist" letter by the office of Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers advising him to stop misrepresenting the Republican Party and one of its top lawmakers.

Amidst mounting criticism from secular forces, Republican Party leaders yesterday said that they have not invited Modi to address them via video link at the Capitol Hill on November 19, in what could be a major embarrassment for the Gujarat Chief Minister.

Gujarat’s performance in poverty reduction and human development has been poor compared to other states which are growing at a lower rate. According to the 2011 India Human Development Report, in the human development index the state slipped from the 5th rank in 1996, to the 9th rank in 2006. It is the worst performer in child malnutrition with 69.7% of children up to the age of five anemic and 44.6% malnourished. Health indicators for the scheduled tribes (STs) are worse than that at the national level, and also poorer than that for other social groups in the state.

According to the Global Hunger Index brought out by the International Food Policy Research Institute, India ranks 66 among the 88 countries listed. Among the five worst performers is Gujarat. Gujarat’s literacy rate is only marginally above the national average, and is extremely low in the tribal belt. In sum, Gujarat has proved to be one state where social welfare has not proved commensurate with increases in rates of economic growth.
What else can you expect from a CHAI WALA……

Joseph saab, you have been talking about these points which doesn't matter to the common man. INC fought election on these factors and lost miserably. Do you know which state has provided basic infrastructure like electricity, water supply, roads...Its Gujarath. States which is having highest number of fast growing citis ...its Gujarath....The only state which has done interlinking of waters...it is Gujarath....Most agricultural products produced is Gujarath...And most importantly the only state where there is ZERO communal riots since 2003...it is Gujarath....That's common man needs....Malnutrition kids are born in even well do to families....its all depends on the day to day health index of the people.....More over malnutritionn is a issue across India...Not only India...across all developing nations....SO stop spreading false propaganda over and over which INC tried and failed in 2008.

Josephji, Looks like you have picked the facts where Gujarath is low. Have you tried the similar index for other states which are rules by INC. You talk about the data and facts which is a "Don't care" for the common man. First try to understand and develop knowledge on why Gujarath chose Modi continuously....Of course MP and Chattisgharh are not far behind. Excpept Delhi which will be lost by INC in a few weeks, which state has shown growth compare to Gujarath? Don't talk about the facts which INC tried to make issue and lost its face in 2008. Common man has already told "Don't car" for those.
