Run feast expected in first ODI

Kochi, Nov 20 (IANS): With the opening tie of the three-match India-West Indies ODI series set to begin here at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday it's excitement all round as hundreds of cricket enthusiasts turned up at the stadium to cheer as the two teams practiced here Wednesday.

The only cause of concern about the match at the nearly 50,000 capacity Jawaharalal Nehru Stadium is the rains.

The Indian team arrived for practice in the morning. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said they will not be taking the West Indies lightly.

"In one day they are definitely a very strong side and we will never take them lightly. The final team will be announced only after having a look at the pitch tomorrow morning," said Dhoni.

Arriving in the ground after lunch were the visitors and after a two hour practice session, the team returned to the hotel.

West Indian captain Dwayne Bravo said the team would be looking to bounce back after the 0-2 drubbing they received in the Test series.

The pitch and the outfield look fresh and a KCA official told IANS the pitch will be full of runs.

"Kochi has always had a good batting strip and this time too it's not going to be any different. The atmosphere will be electric with fans already arriving from across the state," said the official who did not wish to be identified.

Elaborate security arrangements are in place and Inspector General of Police K. Padmakumar said that the spectators will be allowed in from 10.30 a.m.

"Those who come out of the stadium will not be allowed to return," Padmakumar added.

Video cameras, helmets, backpacks, flag sticks (other than hollow PVC Pipes) and crackers have been strictly prohibited.

"India is going to win hands down but we wish to see Chris Gayle firing on all cylinders and then only can there be fireworks from Dhoni, Yuvraj, Kohli and Raina," said a cricket enthusiast.
