Brazilian media laud 'World Cup bound' Robinho

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 21 (IANS): Brazilian media hailed the return of Robinho to the 'Selecao' after his sparkling cameos against Honduras and Chile.

Robinho impressed as a halftime substitute in Brazil's 5-0 victory over Honduras Saturday before heading in the winner after again coming off the bench in a 2-1 victory over Chile Tuesday, reports Xinhua.

The performances followed a two-year international exile for the AC Milan winger due to injuries and poor form.

"Back in the Selecao after a long absence, Robinho is closer to taking part in his third World Cup next year. The attacker has won points with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari," O Globo said Wednesday.

Folha de S. Paulo was similarly effusive in its praise.

"Robinho did what was asked of him and took a big step towards convincing Scolari to take him to the World Cup," the newspaper said.

Estado de S. Paulo went even further, saying the former Santos prodigy had "practically guaranteed" a ticket to football's showpiece tournament.

Robinho's goal in Boston Tuesday made him Brazil's leading scorer against Chile with nine goals, surpassing the mark previously held by Pele.

In both matches, Robinho was used in an unfamiliar centre-forward role, replacing Atletico Mineiro striker Jo.
