Iran briefs India over landmark nuclear deal

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): Iran Monday briefed India about the landmark agreement -- restricting its nuclear programme but providing relief from sanctions -- that it signed Sunday with the US and five other global powers, said official sources here.

According to the sources, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour briefed Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh on the issue here Monday.

Rahimpour also called on the External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

"The visiting Iranian deputy minister provided a detailed briefing to the foreign secretary about the scenario in the region in the light of the Interim Agreement between Iran and E3 plus 3 and outlined prospects of moving forward in the evolving situation," said a source.

As per the agreement, Iran has accepted strict constraints on its nuclear programme for the first time in the past decade but will get partial relief from international sanctions.

According to official sources, Rahimpour and Singh also discussed ways to improving bilateral economic cooperation, particularly the Chabahar port project in which India is keen to participate.
