Winning start by Indian cueists at World Snooker Championship


Daugavpils (Latvia), Nov 29 (IANS): Indian cueists, notably 17-year-old debutant Varshaa Sanjeev, chalked up victories in the preliminary league of the IBSF World Snooker Championship here Friday.

Bangalore schoolgirl Varshaa defeated Elnaz Matahar from Iran 3-1 in her opening Group F fixture while national champion Vidya Pillai began her campaign strongly by winning both her league fixtures.

Also winning their opening league matches were Neena Praveen and Arantxa Sanchis but Chitra Magimairajan lost both her Group C outings.

In the men’s event, Manan Chandra won both his group matches to remain on course for the knock-out stage while Brijesh Damani came through his opening fixture and Shahbaaz Khan lost his first league match.
