'Concentrate on reversing internal displacement after riots'

New Delhi, Nov 30 (IANS): The government should lay emphasis on reversing the internal displacement caused due to communal violence, activists here Saturday.

"There is not a single agency who looks after the issues of displacement caused due to communal violence. In Muzaffarnagar, the problem of internal displacement is immense," said social activist Farhan Najmi.

The activists urged that once the problem of displacement is looked into, then only can the problem of health and education be addressed.

"When we visited the camps meant for the victims of Muzaffarnagar violence, there were 12 to 15 percent of students who had to give classes 10 and 12 boards. As these children do not have access to books or schools, the government has to pay attention," said Poornima Gupta, a social worker.

"Health is another issue in the violence-hit camps and there are no means to address the issues of pregnant women. So the government and the civil society need to work together," said Pushpa, another social activist.
