Japan's martial arts to be showcased in Kolkata

Kolkata, Dec 2 (IANS): Get ready for a Samurai session in January next year, when an exhibition here will take people through the history of Japan's legendary warriors and its famed martial arts culture.

An array of weapons and props used in combat techniques will be put on display at the 13-day "Spirit of Budo" (spirit of Japanese martial arts) beginning Jan 6, said an official release by the Japanese consulate.

Aptly christened "Budo" (Bu as in war, Do meaning way in Japanese), the event will showcase historical weapons like bows and arrows, Katana (traditional Japanese sword), helmets, suits of armour etc.

Materials and photo panels of popular sports and physical exercises such as Kendo, Judo, Sumo etc. will also be shown.

In an ambience that would remind martial arts enthusiasts of Japan, DVDs on life and culture of Samurai warriors will also be screened.

The exhibition organised by the consulate general of Japan and the Japan Foundation in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will also feature attire used by the Samurais and other martial artists of Japan.
