Kozhikode, Dec 3 (IANS): Kerala Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said Tuesday that the trial court will rule on the prisoners of Kozhikode jail who were accessing the social media from inside the prison.
Speaking to reporters outside the jail here, the minister said since this involved undertrial prisoners, the court will decide what needs to be done.
"A high level probe team consisting of the Jail DGP, state police chief and home secretary will conduct a detailed probe on this episode and once that comes out, further action would be taken. We have also decided to strengthen the security of the jails and sensors to detect the use of a mobile phone would be installed," Radhakrishnan said.
TV channels here Monday aired visuals of three undertrial prisoners charged with the murder of a former CPI-M leader T.P. Chandrasekheran last year who were found to have posted photographs on Facebook.
Kodi Sunni, Kirmani Manoj and Mohammed Shafi posed within the jail premises, wearing shorts and sunglasses, and posted their photographs on Facebook.
"We will inform the trial court on all what has happened and with their permission we will move these prisoners to other jails and let the court decide on what needs to be done about violation of jail rules," said Radhakrishnan, who has come under flak from several quarters on this serious lapse.
Chandrasekheran, who was ousted by the Communist Party of India-Marxist in 2008 after he became the proverbial thorn in the side of the party in Kozhikode district, founded another party, the Revolutionary Marxist Party.
As the 51-year-old was returning home near Onchiyam in Kozhikode district May 4, 2012, he was hacked 51 times by a group of armed gangsters.
Thirty-six people are in jail as undertrials in this case. Among those accused in the case were state, district and leaders of the CPI-M, including the husband of a party legislator.
TV visuals last month showed CPI-M legislator K.K. Lathika having food in a restaurant with her husband P. Mohanan, one of the accused in the case, as the man was being taken to hospital for a check-up.
"We are really shocked on what has been happening in this case and it has come to a stage where serious doubts have come up if there is an unholy alliance between the top brass of the CPI-M and the Congress party to dilute this case," K.K.Rema, the widow of Chandrasekheran, told reporters Tuesday.
