Two Assamese youth arrested for raping IT professional

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 3 (IANS): Two Assamese youth working as contract workers in a private firm at a resort here have been arrested for raping a Bangalore-based IT professional, said a top police official Tuesday.

A.J. Thomaskutty, Thiruvananthapuram Superintendent of Police (rural) told reporters here that the two have confessed to the crime and investigations are going on.

"The incident occurred Nov 28 at the resort at Poovar (near Kovalam) when the two youths broke open the rear door of the room in which the woman was sleeping. One of them abused the woman and when the second youth tried to do it, she kicked them and shouted for help and they ran away," said Thomaskutty.

The woman, 40, was part of an IT company from Bangalore and had come with a team here for a meeting Nov 27. "The two youth - Luckynath, 20, and Personagam, 22 - hail from Jorhat district of Assam and were posted in the resort as pest control staff from a Kottayam-based pest control company," said Thomaskutty.

The official complaint was made by the woman through her company the next day and the police questioned the resort staff. "We recovered wooden beads and male hair from the room. After looking at the album (photographs) of the resort, we zeroed down on four people who wore similar beads and after initial questioning, the two arrested confessed to the crime," said Thomaskutty.

The two were charged under IPC 376 (D) (gang rape) and would be produced in court Wednesday.

"The victim told us she would come here from Bangalore to identify the two arrested either today (Tuesday) or tomorrow (Wednesday)," added the police official.
