Security forces seize arms, ammunition in Mizoram


Aizawl, Dec 3 (IANS): The security forces have seized a large cache of arms and ammunition, including foreign-made arms, from a truck in Mizoram's Serchhip district, police said here Tuesday.

Two people, including the driver of the vehicle, were arrested.

"Acting on a tip-off, Mizoram Police and Assam Rifles troopers in a joint raid have seized arms and ammunition Monday night from Khawlailung village (in eastern Mizoram), bordering Myanmar," a police spokesman told reporters.

The seized arms and ammunition included ten modified assault rifles along with 20 loaded magazines, four Chinese rifles along with eight loaded magazines, one light machine gun (LMG), 39 live grenades, one foreign-made pistol, one telescope used for rifles, a pistol silencer and 535 rounds of live cartridges.

Police have arrested Thangdeihtung, 34, driver of the truck, and Liankhanmang, 30, both residents of Champai town bordering Myanmar.

Senior police officials are interrogating the duo.
