22 kg heroin recovered from Samjhauta Express

Amritsar, Dec 4 (IANS): Officials of the central customs department Tuesday recovered 22 kg of heroin from the Samjhauta Express, the peace train between India and Pakistan.

The drugs consignment was being smuggled from Pakistan to India.

Customs officials here said the recovery was made during checking of the train. The train had arrived from Lahore Monday night.

"The heroin consignment was hidden in a bag and was found during checking today (Tuesday)," customs deputy commissioner Vijay Bahadur said from Attari, 30 km from here.

The bag containing the drugs was put in between fabric and leather goods imported from Pakistan by Indian traders.

Customs officials said the connivance of customs and railways officials from Pakistan could not be ruled out in the heroin smuggling as the bag was sealed by authorities there after checking.

Bahadur said an investigation was on about the person to whom the consignment was to be delivered.

In 2012, customs officials had recovered over 135 kg of heroin smuggled from Pakistan to India in cement bags being imported from that country.
