Montpellier coach Fernandez resigns

Paris, Dec 6 (IANS): Montpellier football coach Jean Fernandez has quit as the side struggles above the relegation zone in French Ligue 1.

His resignation came the day after a 0-2 loss at home against Lorient, which leaves the club fourth from bottom amongst 20 top-flight teams, reports Xinhua.

The 59-year-old former Nancy coach took in charge of Montpellier at the beginning of the season, but the team just managed two wins from 16 matches under his reign.

"I saw the players and the (club) president concerning my decision. I felt I was the subject of a lot of criticism. In the best interests of the club and the team, it was better to stop," he said.

Club president Louis Nicollin slammed Fernandez after the club's 0-2 loss at Marseille last Friday, stating he had made a mistake in recruiting him.
