Kundapur, Apr 22: Just when the administration and the elected representatives seem to be on wrong track treating the Naxal problem as law and order problem, Naxalites come up with a move that justifies the views of the administrators.

This is what took place at Kotuguli near here on Friday April 21 morning. A group of 10 armed Naxalites, 7 men and three women, came to one Gurudat Chatra's home along with some members of "Hasla" tribe and demanded Rs 2.50 lac from Gurudat.  The Naxalites also threatened Gurudat with life in case he fails to pay the money in next two months.

The Naxalites came to Chatra's home and called him to come out.  But when he did not come, they went to his home and talked with him.  Here one could remember that in August 2005, the Naxalites had attacked Chatra's house and damaged two cars belonging to him.  The reason behind the attack was that Chatra had been ill-treating his labourers belonging to the tribal "Hasla" community.

However, the issue was later solved as Chatra had withdrawn his petition for stay order against using the river water by the Hasla community. He had even paid compensation to one Baccha Hasla and given him 65 cents of land. 

However, Gurudat and his family had shifted their residence to the city after this incident.  However, Gurudat used to visit Kotuguli once in a while to take care of his fields and farm. 

On Friday Naxalites met him during one of his visits and threatened him with life.  The sources said that the same group of Naxalites was involved in the previous attack on Gurudat's house. The Naxalites have also asked Gurudat not to inform police or the journalists about their visit.  So Gurudat has not yet filed a case with the police.

It is quite strange to note that Naxalites are frequently visited the villages despite police and Anti Naxal Force (ANF) claiming that they are continuing combing operation. 

It now seems that Naxalism is slowly turning out into a menace from a people's movement.  Unless the administration wakes up from slumber and takes some measures, the state will soon face situation which the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh is facing for long.
