Udupi, Apr 29: In a rare incident, a leopard which came to the village leaving woods fell into a well at Innanje near Kaup here on Friday April 28.
The residents of Innanje had regularly been complaining about their chickens and dogs being eaten by leopard for long. Though the complaint had been filed with the forest department, no action had been taken.
On Thursday night the leopard had come to one Shivram Shetty's house at Innanje in search of prey. It was found out on the next day that it had even eaten one hen. However, later it fell in the nearby well.
The incident came to light only on Friday morning when the family members went to the well to fetch water. They were shocked to see leopard in the well. Immediately they emptied the water from the well. By then hundreds of people had gathered to have the glimpse of this rare guest.
Later on a message was sent to Udupi forest department and police. Meanwhile no one tried to rescue leopard since it was quite strong.
At last the forest department officials lowered a cage covered with net. A hen was placed inside the cage to lure leopard to come into the cage. All these efforts were successful as the forest department officials managed to rescue the leopard by 4 pm on Friday. The leopard was later taken to Kudremukh reserve forest.
