Udupi, May 1: A teenaged boy drowned in River Sita at Handikallu near famous Jomlu Teertha at Hebri here on Saturday April 29 evening.
The deceased has been identified as Hussein Sohail (19), son of Ibrahim of Ulaibettu of Gurpur near Mangalore. Ibrahim had gone to Chara near Hebri on Saturday to fetch mangoes along with his two sons, Mohammad Hanif and Hussein Sohail and a labourer.
After plucking mangoes, all of them had gone to River Sita to take bath. However, Sohail did not come up from the water. Though, Ibrahim and another son searched for Sohail, they did not find him. So Ibrahim lodged a complaint with the Hebri police in this regard.
Accordingly, the police came to the spot on Sunday April 30. By that time Sohail's body had already come to the surface. The body was handed over to the family after the autopsy at Hebri government hospital.
The family sources said that Sohail was an expert swimmer. But the deep waters in River Sita at Jomlu overpowered him. Jomlu, a famous tourist spot is also known as death spot. Several murders, suicide, drowning cases have been reported from the area. Though a warning has been issued against getting into the river in certain places, tourists get down to take bath and in most of the cases pay a heavy price for neglecting the warning.
