Salman, Madhuri defend Saifai performance, donate Rs 25 lakh

Mumbai, Jan 9  (PTI) : Under all round criticism, Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit today justified their participation in the Uttar Pradesh government's cultural event in Saifai village, saying they were there for charity.

The government and the stars are facing public criticism for the extravaganza at the ancestral village of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, at a time when Muzaffarnagar riot victims are suffering.

47-year-old Salman, who drew the ire of online users with many tweeting to boycott his upcoming release 'Jai Ho', said his charity organisation Being Human has donated Rs 25 lakh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital in the state.


"Whenever I visit a place for a performance or a promotion, I see it as an opportunity to help the locals in the areas of healthcare or education..."

"And in Etawah, Being Human, on behalf of all artistes who performed yesterday, has committed to fund 200 paediatric heart surgeries in UP... We have also contributed Rs 25 lakh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital for the purchase of an Echo Machine, Pediatric & neo natal ventilator and a portable X-ray machine for their paediatric cardiac ICU," Salman wrote on his Facebook page.

Dixit, whose latest release 'Dedh Ishqiya' got an aid of Rs 1 crore sum from the UP government, also took to Twitter to defend her participation.

"As artistes and celebrities, we believe in using our reach to help others through drawing attention to the needs of the day," Madhuri, 46, tweeted.

"For UP, on behalf of the artistes who performed at Safai, Being Human is donating Rs 25 lakhs to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College," she further tweeted.

Besides Salman and Madhuri, the event was attended by celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Sara Khan, Elli Avram, Mallika Sherawat, Zarine Khan, music composer duo Sajid-Wajid, singer Javed Ali and many other TV actors.

    Salman Khan is far better that Indian Politicians.

    Peoples is unnecessarily angry about Sallu Bhai and Madhuris.It is not their fault.It is the system that needs to be cleaned.If a circus is performing somewhere and there that places there is tensions can you blame the circus animals for it.These Madhuris and Salmans are professional actors they is just doing their jobs,Sallu bhai is proved he is humanitarians and is big inspirations to minorities due to his rags to riches rise to stardoms.He makes mistakes but he is Humanitarians and he makes amends for his mistakes.He has compensated well the hit and run victims, he is driving over in drunk states.He is admitting his mistakes as a human beings like a true Islamic man.And he is making amends for it, unlike many others.We must understand him and his actions.He is killing the blackbucks but honestly not knowing it is endangered.Still he is trying to compensate for it but locals is dragged him to court for it.All these things are needed to be put in perspective.It is responsibilities of state govt towards riot victims, not the bollywood's.madhuris is also do charity and salman is giving medical equipments to treat people after riots breaking out in the future.We must give the credit where it is due and not criticize for the sake of it.What do you say dear readers do you is agreeing with me or not.

    @ Milan,
    Salman has given 25 lakhs to one of the UP organizations. Same way, he is donating crores under his charitable foundation 'Being Human'. So you just don't assume Salman donated only 25 lakhs in his lifetime and appreciate his charity work.
    Also, 25 lakhs may be peanut for Salman, but, that amount is lot for the poor people, who are benefited

    Salman/Madhuri,... the damage control shows very obviously. I understand Salman is arrogant, and conceals his arrogance under 'Being Human' but what about you Madhuri...When the whole world knows that the UP government was window dressing Muzzafar Nagar by forcibly clearing up the camps, you had the audacity to do a show... Shame

    These celebrities will only wake up when there is an adverse reaction from aam admi who really suffer for all reasons. They have managers for all aspects to look into minute by minute. sack them if they are directly involved. Maybe dawood/shakeel with yadavs from UP have a hand beneath a TOWEL.
