Mumbai, May 12: State chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh yesterday asked government officials to ensure that all footpaths in Mumbai were free of slums and encroachments within two years.

He was speaking at a meeting on implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi Pathkranti scheme at Mantralaya.
There were over 25,000 hutments on the footpaths in Mumbai, Deshmukh said. Rehabilitation of these slumdwellers would cost Rs 625 crore and road repair would cost Rs 43 crore, he said.

Last year, 200-hectares of land in the city was made slum-free, slums again came up on 100 hectares of the same land, he said.
