Devyani's husband, kids to join her soon

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS): Devyani Khobragade, the Indian diplomat at the centre of an Indo-US diplomatic spat, is to be soon reunited with her family.

The 39-year-old Khobragade returned to India Jan 10, leaving behind her Indian American husband and two children.

Her children and husband are to join her in India soon, according to sources.

Khobragade's Dec 12 handcuffing and strip-search for alleged visa fraud and underpaying her nanny triggered outrage in India, leading to a standoff with the US.

She was indicted by a grand jury for visa fraud and making false statements about the employment of nanny Sangeeta Richard. She was told to leave the US after India refused to waive her diplomatic immunity to face trial. India had asked a US diplomat to leave the country in a reciprocal measure.

After her arrival, Khobragade had said in interviews to media that she was missing her children.

The former Indian deputy consul general in New York was arrested on way to drop her children to school in New York.

She has joined the ministry of external affairs in the Development Partnership Administration (DPA) department.

With the cases against her still standing and the US unwilling to take them back, Khobragade can not return to America.

According to Indian laws, the spouses of Indian diplomats have to be Indian. With Khobragade's husband being an American -- albeit of Indian origin, how the new issue would be resolved has to be seen.
