Mangalore, May 18: Centre for Advanced Neurological Research was inaugurated at the K S Hegde Charitable Hospital here on Wednesday May 17. The Centre was inaugurated by Dr M S Valiathan, founder director, Sreechitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and former vice-chancellor, MAHE.
Speaking on the occasion, Valiathan said that though genetic engineering has enabled detection of harmful genes in the human body, it has not advanced to a stage where the harmful genes may be replaced with another.
Centre Director Prof Lekha Pandit informed that the centre has been set up solely for conducting research into common and preventable genetic disorders that affect the nervous system. There will also be clinical research combined with molecular genetic studies in various degenerative and post-infectious disorders of the brain.
Among those present were KSHEMA dean Dr M Shantaram Shetty, Neurologist Dr K R Shetty, Medical Education (Kerala) former director Dr Shantakumari and UAS Director Dr I Karunasagar.
