Mangalore, May 19 (8-40 pm): H N Satyanarayana Rao, long tipped to be the inspector general of police, western range once again, indeed took up his second innings in Mangalore on Friday. Being a familiar territory, his task here is likely to be much smoother.
He earlier held the same post for 17 months up to July 2005, when IGP K S Suresh Babu took over. Since Babu retired last month, the post had remained vacant.
Rao took the salute at the formal welcome parade on the police grounds. Thereafter, he took over charge in his office. Later he addressed the media community.
At the media interaction, he spelt out his five priorities:
1. Maintaining the communal harmony
2. Curbing the Naxal menace
3. Strict vigil over terrorists
4. Trying to streamline the traffic in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Uttar Kannada districts (being the four districts under his jurisdiction)
5. Fighting organized crime
His stringent handling of the Naxalite problem during his earlier tenure here was taken into consideration and might have prompted his repeat posting in Mangalore, said informed sources.
