Arunachal MLA's son beaten to death in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI): An Arunachal Pradesh MLA's son, studying in a college here, was allegedly thrashed by some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar area of south Delhi when he retaliated after they made fun of his hairstyle, which led to his death.

Nido Tanian, son of Congress MLA and parliamentary secretary in health and family welfare department, Nido Pavitra, died at his home in Green Park area on Thursday, police said.

His relatives claimed that he had an altercation with some shopkeepers on Wednesday after they made fun of his hairstyle, following which they allegedly thrashed him.

Some locals intervened and the quarrel was stopped after which Tanian came back home. However, his condition suddenly deteriorated yesterday after which he died under suspicious circumstances, his relatives claimed.

"His postmortem has been carried out in AIIMS. The cause of death would be clear only after the autopsy report. There was some altercation he had on Wednesday, we are investigating the case," a senior police official said.

A youth claiming to be his cousin told a TV channel, "This is surely about racism. Everybody in Delhi discriminates against us based on our looks. We are living in India, but we don't know whether we are actually living in India or not.. every time we are discriminated against.

"His family has been informed," he said.

This is a sad incident..Should not happen to anyone..

But in Arunachal Pradesh we are strangers..to enter that state we need to get inner-line-permit for a certain period. Once the period gets over we have to move out from there..its like visa...

Yes, we feel pity for what has happened to this young man. I have south Indian friend whose father was a Government employee and he was born and brought up in Arunachal Pradesh and according to him he has experienced much more discrimination in Arunachal Pradesh itself than any other parts of India. He was assaulted many times by the locals there. But this a pathetic and more serious issue to be dealt carefully.

The only kinds of people not racially discriminated in entire India are the lucky North Indians. And if they are Punjabi or Gujarati they are the luckiest.

Sad that racial discrimination against the North Eastern people is not reducing....Two years back the rumours spread in Bangalore was so bad....however no one was attacked or killed. But this sad incident shows that law & order in capital is very poor still

Had it been any other country and the victim was Indian, there would have been protests from everywhere against racism, discrimination. But

Early 90's I worked in Baroda, Gujarat, a polymer manufacturing factory...native people working in the factory called me Lungi and others Madrasee... Honestly I never wore a lugi in my life...!! I did not bother about it that time!!! Now I have enough words to confront them!! We do not go for Jambuwa( Food...that can not fit B/F, lunch or dinner at midnight!) at midnight!! They consider them progressive, but do not have etiquette and manners(lot of them) to retain their dignity!! The headline of this news is no different!! Even a beggar feels superior because he belongs to NCR (New Delhi Capital region!?), People of south are far more compassionate and kind to people from other states except for few isolated incidents!!

Very sad and unfortunate incident. But there are lots of north eastern students studying or living in Delhi for various reasons.Normally any shop keeper would be interested only in the sales. They don't care who the customer is.I mean not bothered about religion or race of their customers.I think there must be some specific reason for the broil. After all he is a politician's son.

    Mr. Shenoy,
How it began and how it ended matters!
He was teased for his looks.
Is it his fault for his looks?
Can anyone create themselves the way they want?
Who created him? By taunting him, are these teasers not taunting his CREATOR?
FINALLY WHAT? He retaliated for racial taunt and GOT KILLED!
    THAT'S ALL.

    Very Sad incident.
North East people feel insecure in their own Country!
Definitely, people need to take lessons on unity in diversity to be a vibrant nation.
We speak of threat to our people in foreign lands, but in our own soil, our own are discriminated on the basis of race, religion and castes.
No Indian should ever feel insecure in his / her own Country!
