Gunfight between security forces, militants in Kashmir


Srinagar, Jan 31 (IANS): A gunfight broke out between separatist guerrillas and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district Friday during a joint search operation for militants, a police official said.

The gunfight broke out in Kangan area of Pulwama after a joint operation was launched by police, counter insurgency 55 Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of guerrillas.

"When the hiding militants were challenged to surrender, they started firing at the security forces triggering an encounter which is still on. Further details are awaited," a senior police officer told IANS.
