Pakistan SC seeks appearance of senior police officer

Islamabad, Feb 4 (IANS): The Pakistan Supreme Court Tuesday issued summons for the Punjab Police Inspector General (IG) to appear before it in a case relating to the gang-rape of a woman upon the orders of a panchayat in Muzaffargarh district.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, asked Additional Advocate General of Punjab Abdul Razzaq Mirza as to why the IG Punjab did not appear before the court when notice was issued to him, the Dawn online reported.

The apex court ordered the IG to appear at the next hearing and in person present a report on the case.

The court later adjourned the hearing for 10 days.

On Jan 24, the panchayat ordered the gang-rape of a 40-year-old woman in revenge for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of Radiwala village, about 80 km from Muzaffargarh.

At least seven of the nine accused in the case have been arrested.
