Mangalore, May 24: A teenaged girl disturbed by her mother's refusal to take her to a wedding reception ended her life by setting herself ablaze at Panjimogaru near Kavoor here on Wednesday May 24 morning.

Shakuntala (16), daughter of the late Thimma of Panjimogaru committed suicide on Wednesday morning at her home when no one else was at home.

It is said that one of her relatives was getting married at Moodbidri on Wednesday.  When her mother got ready to go for the marriage, Shakuntala told that she too would accompany her.  But her mother refused.

Taking this very seriously, Shakuntala set herself ablaze once mother left the house. Her elder sister and brothers had gone for work and she was with her younger sister.  A little while later, her younger sister went to their neighbour's house.

Taking advantage of this time, Shakuntala set herself ablaze after pouring kerosene on her body.  However, once the fire caught her, she shouted for help.  Hearing her shouting for help, her younger sister and uncle came running to the house.  To their utter shock, they found Shakuntala being caught in fire.  But before they could do anything Shakuntala ran and fell in the compound of the neighbouring house and died on the spot.

The Kavoor police who came to spot immediately have registered a case in this regard.
