New Delhi, May 27: Girls outperformed boys yet again in the Class X examination results of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared on Saturday.

According to CBSE officials, pass percentage was recorded at 77.16 per cent and Chennai topped among all the zones with Ajmer and Chandigarh following in the second and third positions.
Delhi was fifth in the list.

Around 647,992 candidates, including 268,939 girls, appeared for the examination in March. The pass percentage of 77.16 percent is an increase of 2.56 per cent in comparison to 2005.
CBSE officials also said that 77.7 per cent girls passed the exam whereas the figure was a little lower for boys at 76.77 per cent.

The pass percentage for regular students was 79.56 per cent and for private candidates, who do not attend school but take the exam, was 28.81 per cent.

The examination was held at 2,473 centres in India and abroad. Of the 49 foreign centres, 37 were in Gulf countries where over 8,000 students wrote the exam.

This year, an extra 15 minutes of "cool off" time was given to the students for the first time to allow them to read the question paper and plan the answers before they started writing.

The board had also redesigned three papers for Class 10 - mathematics, social science and science - to help students complete the exam in two-and-a-half hours.

The results, besides being made available at the respective schools, can also be accessed through SMS on mobile phones, Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) on phone as well as on the CBSE websites.

Students can also log on to the websites www.cbse.nic.in, www.cbse.gov.In, www.results.nic.In and www.cbseresults.nic.in to access the results.

Telephone service providers like MTNL, Idea, Airtel and Hutch too will provide their subscribers results on a nominal payment. They will also offer results through SMS.

The helpline, which will also be operational in Dubai, Kuwait and Doha in Qatar, will be functional till June 6.
