Decentralisation needed to tackle corruption: Rahul Gandhi

Guwahati, Feb 25 (IANS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said Tuesday that decentralisation of power is essential to tackle corruption.

Addressing a rally in Assam, Gandhi said that power needs to be decentralised and given to the people and the local bodies in the states.

"More power is given to the councils, local bodies and people, more better it is for the people in the state," he said in Diphu.

The rally took place days after Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi addressed the people of Assam.

"In the coming time we want to consult the people here, and after that distribute the party tickets for the elections.

"Because there is too much of centralisation of power among a few people, the decentralisation of power in the hands of the people is very much required," Gandhi said.

He added: "All our developments are based on the idea of giving power to people. We want to make sure that people are not only safe but also have certain rights."
