Freiburg hold Berlin to goalless draw

Berlin, March 1 (IANS): Berlin failed to grab decisive points against bottom side Freiburg in the 23rd round of the Bundesliga.

Hertha Berlin squandered the chance to tighten their place in the top-6 as the hosts shared the spoils following a goalless draw Friday. Thus, Freiburg remain in relegation zone, reports Xinhua.

The hosts nearly caught a bright start as Sami Allagui pulled just wide with 20 seconds into the game. Freiburg, who were mostly defensive, worked out their first chance in the eighth minute when Berlin goalkeeper Thomas Kraft had to defuse Admir Mehmedi's deflected shot on target.

Berlin midfielder Marcel Ndjeng created the best chance for the hosts when he headed just wide of the left post. However, the visitors had arguably their best chance to break the deadlock through Mehmedi, who was unable to overcome Kraft following a square pass by Jonathan Schmid (44th minute).

Freiburg's best man had another chance tie but Kraft tipped his effort over the bar to deny the opener after the restart. Meanwhile, Freiburg custodian Oliver Baumann denied Adrian Ramos twice to secure one point for his side.
