Hearing of Musharraf treason trial adjourned till March 7

Islamabad, March 5 (IANS): A special court in Pakistan formed to try former president Pervez Musharraf for high treason Wednesday adjourned the hearing till March 7 after his lawyers voiced concerns regarding the security situation.

The former army chief is facing the charge of high treason, which can carry the death sentence, for imposing Emergency and subverting the constitution in 2007.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Faisal Arab, is hearing the case. Musharraf's lawyers said they could not continue with the proceedings in the prevailing security situation, reported the Dawn online.

Musharraf's counsel Ahmad Raza Kasuri said members of the Pakistan Bar Council and Islamabad High Court Bar Association tried to stop him from entering the special court.

The lawyers are on strike since Tuesday following Monday's bomb attack in a court here that left at least 11 people dead, including additional sessions judge Rafaqat Awan, and injured 29.

Musharraf's team of lawyers presented an alleged threat letter by Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan in the court and claimed that an attack could occur in the special court as well.
