Kashmiri students face sedition charge for cheering Pak

Meerut, Mar 6 (PTI): A group of Kashmiri students at a private university in Meerut were today booked for sedition after they allegedly cheered for the Pakistan team during a cricket match that India lost as district authorities stepped into the matter, ordering a magisterial inquiry.

Criticising the slapping of sedition charges against the students, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said it was an "unacceptably harsh punishment" that will ruin the future of the students and will further alienate them.

Omar said he would take up the matter with his UP counterpart Akhilesh Yadav and try to get the charges dropped.

Around 60 Kashmiri students at Swami Vivekananda Subharti University in Meerut were expelled for three days from the hostel after they had allegedly supported Pakistan cricket team against India in the Asia Cup match between the two sides on Sunday last.

SSP, Meerut, Omkar Singh said that on the basis of the complaint submitted by University Chancellor PK Garg, unnamed Kashmiri students have been booked under section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 427 (mischief) of IPC.

District Magistrate Pankaj Yadav has ordered a magisterial inquiry and Additional City Magistrate Rambharta Tewari has been given the charge of the case, Additional District  Magistrate, Meerut, Satish Kumar Dubey said.

University authorities had set up a disciplinary committee to probe the incident.

After preliminary investigations, the authorities had expelled 60 Kashmiri students for three days and asked them to vacate the hostel.

Around 200 Kashmiri students are enrolled in B.Tech and law courses in the university.

What I feel is, it is rather to annoy Indians, they did such a thing rather than their love for Pakistan, so best is not to get annoyed as they will succeed in their mission if we do.

Who is the actual trouble makers, We Indians. How, by dividing and separating each other. This is the result of our own action. If India built the confidence among Kashmiris there is no chance to cheer and support against India. First build the solidarity among them and ask the army to maintain the decency with Kashmiris. In other hand, this was reaction of last month action against Kashmiri Cricketers from Indian forces. If India will go like this, expect more consequence ahead from the unhappy Kashmiris.

At one time we speak of sedition if one supports Pakistan and yet at another we want separate states, kill and abuse people of other states and even ask for special considerations.

When we have people like these who live in India and support Pakistan, we dont need a enemy like Pakistan. All these people thinking in this lines and who support these student should be bundled and deported one way to Pakistan. Not in the heart of Pakistan but in the Taliban infested north Waziristan. They are fit to live in only such places not a civilised society.

I commented earlier based on the report that the sedition charges only for cheering for pak. But when I stuy more on the subject this not just cheering, but also there was a celebration in the campus.

The college has alleged that the students celebrated loudly in the dorm and toted pro-Pakistan slogans, which led to a fight with other students and escalated into vandalism and stone-throwing -Times Of India.
    I doubt the students intentions.
