Agency report
Mumbai, Jun 4: Pravin Mahajan has held Pramod’s secretary Bibek Moitra responsible for the condition of his nephew Rahul, who is battling for his life at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi.
Lodged at the high-security Anda cell (barrack no 2) of Arthur Road Jail, Pravin reacted sharply after hearing of the incident.
“This has happened because of Moitra. He (Moitra) ruined the entire Mahajan family,” Pravin reportedly told an inmate who broke the news of Rahul’s hospitalisation to him.
Mahajan, who detested Rahul’s closeness to Moitra, said, “I am fond of Rahul, but he fell in with the wrong company.”
Pravin had reportedly told jail sources that Rahul was an average student and just managed to pass his HSC. He then did his pilot training from London and took up a job with a private airline, but later quit.
Pravin told inmates that he wanted to see Rahul successful, but was upset after Moitra came in the way of his career.
Arthur Road jail Superintendent Swati Sathe said, “We have not officially informed Pravin about the incident. Presently, he is lodged in a high security cell, which does not have a television set. So, he must have learnt about the incident from inmates.”
Meanwhile, in a bid to connect Pramod Mahajan’s killing with the suspected ‘poisoning’ of Rahul and Moitra, the Delhi Police are likely to question Pravin Mahajan.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Manish Aggarwal, said, “We are exploring all the angles… we are not ruling out the conspiracy theory. In that connection, we might question Pravin Mahajan.”
Rahul’s toxicology report is expected today. If the report rules out an overdose of drugs, the police will concentrate on the conspiracy angle.
Aggarwal added the police have found vital clues from Rahul’s mobile. He admitted finding a white powder in a polythene pouch at the Mahajan home on New Delhi’s Safdarjung Road.
The nature of the substance is under chemical analysis. Aggarwal hinted that the powder might have been kept there to mislead the police.
However, the Mumbai Police - investigating the Pramod Mahajan murder case - feel that Pravin might be only an instrument in the suspected conspiracy. They suspect someone else is calling the shots.
Santosh Rastogi, deputy commissioner of police (zone 3), said, “If we get any further link, we will investigate accordingly.”
