New Delhi, March 12 (IANS): A court here Wednesday issued notice to Delhi's chief electoral officer (CEO) on a plea that said Bangladeshi migrants and people from other states have enrolled in Delhi's voters lists only to satisfy the vested interests of political parties.

The court was hearing a plea filed by Delhi resident Satyavir Singh, who has alleged that domestic migrants, who are registered as electors in other states, have also been issued voter identity cards.

Additional Sessions Judge Sudesh Kumar directed chief electoral officer Vijay Dev to file a response to the petition and posted the matter for April 5.

Satyavir Singh filed a review petition challenging a magisterial court order that declined his request and refused to inquire into allegations of "fake and bogus voters".

The complainant told the court that he had made several complaints to the Election Commission, but no action was taken.

"The essence of democracy is the holding of free and fair elections based on a genuine list. Delhi is the capital city and lakhs of people have (moved here) from other states, and even from Bangladesh, who have got themselves enrolled as voters in Delhi while also holding voter ID cards in their native villages," he said.

Satyavir Singh alleged that the "manipulation was done in collusion with the administrative machinery".

He said it was mandatory for the Election Commission to verify before entering names of voters on electoral lists, but that no such vetting was carried out ahead of last year's assembly elections in Delhi.

Singh requested the court to take necessary action on his plea as per law.
