Mangalore, Jun 5: Prakash Rao, a student of Canara College here, has bagged the first place with 6 points in the open category of the inter-district rapid chess tourney organised by Derek's Chess school on Sunday June 5. The tournament was held at the Sridevi auditorium of the Mangaladevi Temple here.
In the same category, the second and third places went to M G Gahan of Canara School and Vishwas Saralaya of Udupi respectively who secured 5 points each. Udupi's Vikram Saralaya won the fourth place while local boy R Kaushik and Karkala's Deepak Pai bagged the fifth and sixth spot with 4 points each.
In the under-15 category for boys, Prateek of Canara High School secured the top position with 4.5 points. While Vignesh Kamat of Bantwal's SVS School won the second place, Shabdik Varma of SDM English Medium School, Ujire, secured the third place each totalling 3.5 points.
Nivedita of Sullia's Nehru Memorial Educational Institution emerged the winner in the under-15 category for girls with 4 points. The second spot was secured by Shruti Shetty of St Agnes High School, also with 4 points. The third place went to Riyola D'Souza of SVS Bantwal, who totalled 3 points.
With 5 points, Adit Jagdish of Lourdes Central School procured the first place in the under-12 category while 11-year old Nihal Manjunath of the same school won the second place with 4 points. Prajwal Salian of Kalsa's Sadguru Primary School came third also with 4 points.
In the under-12 category for girls, Vanessa D'Souza of St Agnes School came first while M Sahana of Ujire's SDM English Medium School and Seema Melita of SVS English Medium School, Bantwal won the second and third places respectively. Though all three totalled 3 points each, their positions were decided as per progressive points calculation.
In the under-10 category for boys, the first place was bagged by Anish Charit of SVS Bantwal while K Vishal of Canara School won the second place, each with 3.5 points. Prem Appachu, with 3 points, came third.
With 5 and 3.5 points respectively, Andrea D'Souza and Shalon Pais of St Agnes School won the first and second spots while the third place, with two points, went to Chrishel D'Souza of Lady Hill School.
In the under-8 category for boys, the top position was secured by R V Anantharao of Sharada Vidyalaya. The second and third places went to Saurav Baliga of St Aloysius Primary School and Aditya Pai of Beary's Public School. Each of them totalled 3 points.
The first place in under-8 category for girls also went to Sharada Vidylaya with R Ankita winning the first place (4.5 points). Yenopoya School's Nandita Anand, with 3.5 points, secured the second spot while Carmel School's Swati Baliga came third, also with 3.5 points.
Girls out-performed boys in all the events except in the open category.
The winners were awarded by chief guest Raghuram Rao, former director, SCDCC Bank during the valedictory ceremony held on the same evening.
Krishna Baliga of Mangaladevi Devikrishna auditorium, Kings Academy director Gururaj, Ratnavarma Gunnu, Chandrashekar Bhandary, Prasanna Rao, Derek Pinto were present.
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Mangaladevi Temple trustee Raghunath. Shivram Bhat was present on the dais. Prasanna Rao welcomed the gathering and Pratiksha compered.
