Rome, March 21 (IANS): Two tonnes of cocaine has been seized in Italy's southern region of Calabria during a major anti-mafia operation against international drug smuggling, a media report said.
The drugs were imported by Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia from Southern American countries including Brazil and Colombia. They were destined for important ports of European countries.
"So far we have seized two tonnes of cocaine. The drugs trade is very difficult to contain, and we need a homogenous system at the European level," Xinhua quoted Nicola Gratteri, public prosecutor in the city of Reggio Calabria telling Rai state television.
Police have reportedly arrested dozens of 'Ndrangheta affiliates in the investigation, which lasted one year and was conducted with the help of international police forces.
