Indian-American jailed for assault on niece's husband

Washington, March 21 (IANS): An Indian-American man, who hired a person to assault his niece's husband at a Sikh temple as he was reportedly upset over her marrying outside her social class, has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Nirmal Sehmbey, who was sentenced in Bakersfield, California, Thursday will have 65 days credit toward his sentence, according to a report in BakersfieldNow.com

Sehmbey was convicted in February by a Kern County jury of conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to commit assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, the site reported citing KBAK/KBFX.

According to an 23ABC report, Sehmbey paid $1,000 to Jorge Negrete to carry out the attack on Manjit Singh as Singh and his family arrived at their Sikh temple on South P Street.

Negrete is behind bars serving time for his involvement, it said.

Another man involved in the scheme took plea deals in exchange for his cooperation in the prosecution of Sehmbey, KBAK/KBFX said.
