BJP divided into duplicate and original, but duplicate holds reins: Jaswant Singh

Jaipur, Mar 22 (Agencies): The ticket distribution row got heated for the BJP on Saturday when senior leader Jaswant Singh appeared to keep his options open on contesting from Rajasthan's Barmer seat as an Independent.

Jaswant Singh today ruled out any compromise on his demand for Barmer constituency.

He also made veiled attacks on the party leadership but took no names. As party President Rajnath Singh and senior leader Arun Jaitley spoke of utilising Singh's services in an appropriate manner, the BJP leader said: "The party has done this to me twice now and now there is no chance of accepting any alternative proposal."

His statement comes a day after the BJP gave Barmer ticket to a recent entrant and Congress defector Colonel Sonaram Chowdhry.

Referring to the denial of ticket to him and the "disregarding" of other senior leaders in the party, Singh said that "this party of ideology is tragically being encroached upon by those, who have been arch detractors of BJP's ideology."

"It is so unfortunate that the BJP has been completely taken over by the elements (outsiders), who never have any respect of party's ideology", he said without naming anyone.

The former union minister said that the BJP was now divided into two factions "one which is real and the other is unreal or better put original and duplicate. Unfortunately the duplicate part has the reins of party now."

Opposing giving tickets to those who have recently joined the party either as defectors or as new entrants in politics, Singh remarked sarcastically that "for them it is easy to have a BJP ticket than to have a rail or a flight."

Singh turned emotional as he spoke of his "pain" but made it clear that he does not want to do the "politics" of emotions.

He recalled the contributions of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani in building the party and wondered where the party is going now.

A close associate of Vajpayee as well as Advani, whose influence has also waned in the party, he said it is important for the subscribers of the philosophy of BJP to know who has "encroached" on it.

"They should ask where is the party going."

Albeit he is slated to come to Barmer in a couple of days and seek feedback from local supporters and leaders before filing his nomination papers, yet reports on Saturday said the senior leader may quit the BJP on Sunday.

Sources said that if he was given a go-ahead by his supporters, he will contest the elections.

After denying ticket to Jaswant Singh from Barmer, the BJP today sought to placate him saying that he is a senior leader and his services will be utilised appropriately.

Amid reports that Jaswant Singh is planning to quit BJP, party president Rajnath Singh insisted that his "respect" cannot be determined on the basis of ticket.

"Jaswant Singh is a senior leader of the party and we respect him. His dignity cannot be measured in terms of tickets. We will utilise his services and experience appropriately," Rajnath Singh told reporters here.

Asked whether the party will take action against him if he contests as an Independent as is being reported, the BJP chief dismissed it as a hypothetical question.

Earlier in the day, the BJP president reportedly informed Jaswant Singh that the party would not change the candidate for Barmer seat.

Jaswant Singh represented Darjeeling in the outgoing 15th Lok Sabha.

He wanted to fight election from Barmer this time, but the party fielded Colonel Sonaram, who recently switched to the BJP from the Congress.

Following strong protests from some BJP party workers against denial of BJP ticket to Jaswant Singh, a meeting was held at the home of former union minister's son Manvendra Singh on Friday night.

His supporters in Barmer chalked out a strategy to field him as an Independent.

Some workers even took out a protest rally and burnt effigies of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje holding her responsible for denial of the ticket to Jaswant Singh. They also shouted slogans against her.

"Colonel Sonaram had been with Congress for years. Now he has switched loyalties and joined BJP. Fielding him immediately after joining BJP has sent a wrong message to the voters. He should have made to work in the organisation at least for some years before he was given such an opportunity," said a local BJP leader.

If Jaswant Singh decides to contest, he may upset the equations against Sonaram as there are at least 1.5 lakh Rajput voters in Barmer constituency.

"He has influence over voters from other castes also, so Jaswant Singh will definitely make life difficult for the BJP candidate," said Vijay Sharma, a political analyst.

Voting for the 25 parliamentary constituencies in the state will take place on April 17 and 24. In the last elections in 2009, the Congress won 20 seats and the BJP four, while one seat was won by an Independent.

Jaswant Singh hails from Jasol village in Barmer district.

He was member of the union Cabinet during the NDA government.

Jaswant may quit BJP, contest as Independent from Barmer: Sources

Barmer, Mar 22 (IBN): Senior leader Jaswant Singh is likely to quit from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and contest as an Independent from his home town of Barmer in Rajasthan, sources say. Despite making it clear that he wanted to contest from Barmer as it would be his last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP gave him a ticket from Dahod in Gujarat.

A miffed Singh said that he would decide his next course of action on March 24 even as a rattled BJP leadership said that the party would find another another role for him. The veteran leader said, "There is a real and a fake BJP. I cannot decide which is which but the people will. I have fought for the real BJP till now."
Singh's supporters on Saturday targeted BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Barmer and tore up the campaign posters to protest against the denial of ticket to the senior leader who is currently a Lok Sabha MP from Darjeeling in West Bengal.

They also burnt Modi's effigies at several places in Barmer. Several posters of Jaswant Singh have also been put up in Barmer.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley hinted that the BJP is unlikely to re-think its decision denying Jaswant Singh a ticket from Barmer as the party has also named Colonel Sona Ram Choudhury as its candidate from the constituency. "I regret that we were unable to accommodate a senior leader like Jaswant Singh. However, the party will make place for him in some other position," said Jaitley.

BJP President Rajnath Singh said that the party would utilise Jaswant Singh's experience. "Jaswant Singh is a very senior leader and the party values and respects him. BJP will utilise his experience to the fullest," he said.

Earlier, BJP patriarch Lal Krishna Advani too had expresssed his unhappiness over not being allowed to contest from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh after he was given a ticket to contest from his traditional seat of Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

Advani later relented and agreed to contest from Gandhinagar but not before Modi, Sushma Swaraj and Venkaiah Naidu met and mollified him.

Good. Tickets shouldn't be given to these old men. Advani, Jaswanth, Manmohan Singh, and many more are past their prime. Congress and BJP by denying tickets to oldies are going on the right path

BJP denying tickets to Advani and Jaswant has got nothing to do with their age. It appears that Modi wants to get all Advani loyalists in the BJP out of his way so that he can dominate. Even Haren Pathak an MP who is young by politicians' standards has been denied a ticket from where he has previously won in Ahmedabad as he is a known Advani loyalist. In his place actor Paresh Rawal was given the ticket.
I believe Advani was forced to contest from Gandhinagar in Gujarat so that Modi can have the situation under his own control and not allow Advani to do as he pleases.

BJP can't form a government without colliation. Now, none of the colliation leaders will agree for Modi as PM. The disaster begins and Modi will be back to Gujarat.

Asli BJP he meant Vajapyee's BJP & Nakli BJP he meant Modi's BJP.

Abdul: I agree with you. The candidates, leaving a party and joining another, during election time, are not loyal. They are dangerous.(Paswan,Yeddy). They look for winning side to safeguard themselves.
It is true that BJP is mixed with originals & duplicates. Once BJP comes to power (which is certain because of Modi wave, as his message reaches the 80% of voters who are either poor or below middle class. Such people do not have Facebook, News papers, and other sources of s.
Even if they watch TV programs, they watch only serials and nothing beyond. So the message reaches them is only through Rally's which Modi is good at).
Only educated voters understand the reality, but they are only 20%.
Once BJP comes to power, they real colors of DUPLICATES will come out.
WE were fed up with corruption, domination and miss management, it does not mean we wanted BJP rule.?!!!!!!!!!

On the face of it, this issue looks serious & Jaswanth could strike back & settle scores with the BJP, but reality is that he is a spent force now. The firepower to win Barmer is not there in comparision to the opted member Col Sonaram. Winnability is the main factor & we should remember how Jaswanth won last time, scrapped thru by 561 votes in Darjeling only by support of Gorkha National Party. He needs to bow out gracefully rather than get into other issues as NDA stands a bright chance of Govt formation post May 16

If a judge is corrupt, that is the height of injustice. If a doctor is selling organs and killing people, then he is a worst criminal of the highest order. If a army jawan is selling countries secrets to the enemy, he is the worst enemy of the nation. If a party accommodates all such criminals and calls themselves as nationalistic, that is the worst tragedy of all time. That is exactly how BJP is emerging. That is the tragedy. The BJP old guard is aware, however, they are helpless.
