Booze Party : Parents of arrested students say cops stole Rs 65k from their bags

Mumbai, Apr 5 (Mumbai Mirror) : Parents of the 45 Mumbai law students who were arrested from a bungalow in Lonavala and charged with obscenity on Thursday have accused the policemen who raided the party of stealing cash and valuables worth over Rs 65,000 from their children's bags.

The parents allege that around Rs 35,000 in cash and valuables worth around Rs 30,000 are missing from bags left in the bungalow, which was guarded by police constables while the students were taken to the the police station and produced in court.

According to their parents, the students appeared in court on Thursday morning and returned to the bungalow around 9.30 pm to collect their bags and other belongings when they realised that their cash and valuables were missing.

According to the parents, at least seven students found cash missing from their bags. Apart from money, a couple of electronic gadgets, expensive shades and perfumes were also missing from various bags, they said.

"My daughter lost Rs 15,000 cash that was inside her bag. Most of the girls had kept their money in their bags, all of which is missing. Some of us went back to the police station but the police did not cooperate and refused to register a complaint," said the father of one of the 20 female students.

"We were shocked when we entered the bungalow and realised there had been a theft. Only the police were guarding the bungalow; who else could have taken it? The students' phones were safe only because the police confiscated them at the time of the arrest," said the elder brother of one of the students.

It was earlier reported that the owner of the bungalow, Saifuddin Colombowala, and its caretaker, Dilip Yadav, had been charged with allowing the residential premises to be used for commercial activity. It has now emerged that Colombowala, who lives overseas, had leased the bungalow to a certain Seema Kumari for use as a guest house for her company, Hotelport Hospitality Services, four to five months ago.

While the police constables guarded the bungalow, no one else, including the other caretakers, was allowed inside it. "My two other caretakers were told to stay off the premises. I never got a chance to go to the bungalow. As soon as I heard of the incident, I rushed to the police station to bail out my caretaker (Dilip Yadav)," said Kumari.

She added, "One of the students was my friend and had requested the use of the bungalow for a party. I did not charge them anything as it was a favour for a friend. I had warned them not to play loud music after 10 pm. But they refused to listen and got into trouble."

The police, however, rejected the parents' accusations. "The bungalow was guarded by armed policemen. It is impossible that anything could have been stolen from there. We have no complaint registered in the matter," said police inspector I S Patil.
