Maoists torch construction machinery in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, April 8 (IANS): Maoists set ablaze road construction machinery, including two tractors and an excavator, in Odisha's Bargarh district to oppose the building of a road, police said Tuesday.

About 15 guerrillas raided the construction site in Debrigarh reserve forest, about 430 km from state capital Bhubaneswar late Monday night, and set the equipment on fire, district Superintendent of Police Anoop Krishna told IANS.

The rebels were opposed to the construction of the road under central government sponsored Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in the area.

Although some workers were present at the camp, they were asked to leave the place and then the machinery was torched.

They did not cause any harm to the workers, he said.

The Maoists are active in more than half of the state.
