Rongali Bihu celebrated in Delhi

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS): Rongali Bihu, the most colourful festival of Assam, was celebrated with traditional fervour by the Assam Association Delhi.

Besides a variety of cultural programmes at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), a handloom and handicraft exhibition and traditional Assamese food attracted over 2,000 people to the event Sunday evening.

"Assam Association Delhi has been a platform for Assamese people staying in Delhi to come together during the time of festivals and remember the rich cultural heritage of the state. We at Assam Association are providing them a link with their roots," said association president Nilamani Sarmah.

A chorus by local Assamese artists in Delhi set the motion for the evening, while a number of scintillating Bihu dances to the rhythm of popular Assamese songs made youngsters in the audience also shake a leg.

"I have been away from Assam for many years and miss Bihu a lot. So I make it a point not to miss the Bihu festival here in Delhi. I make it a point to attend the Assam Association's Bihu every year," said Rajiv, a Delhi University student.
