Gunmen kill two Yemeni army officers

Sanaa, April 22 (IANS): Suspected Al Qaeda gunmen killed two army officers in the Yemen's capital Sanaa Tuesday, an interior ministry official said.

Two gunmen on a motorbike gunned down the two high-ranking officers near Sanaa international airport while they were heading to their military base early Tuesday, the official told Xinhua.

The gunmen fled the scene before police arrived.

In another attack in Sanaa late Monday, two suspected Al Qaeda militants on a vehicle opened fire on the car of Sanaa security chief Esam Juma'an near a police station, injuring him and his bodyguard, the official said.

The terrorist attack came a day after suspected militants assassinated three senior intelligence officers in two separate attacks in Sanaa Monday.

Security officials said the terrorist attacks were an angry reaction to Sunday's multiple US drone strikes on militant hideouts in the southern provinces of Abyan and Shabwa, in which about 55 militants were killed.

The Yemen-based Al Qaeda offshoot has frequently staged revenge attacks on local targets, including military ones, and foreign missions in the impoverished Arab country.
