Assam records brisk polling


Guwahati, April 24 (IANS): Brisk balloting was recorded in the six Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam that voted Thursday in the last phase in the state, with over 35 percent of the electorate exercising their franchise in the morning.

Long queues were seen in most of the polling stations across the six constituencies.

The turnout was 35.14 percent till 11 a.m., election officials said.

Guwahati saw the highest polling with 38.66 percent, while Barpeta saw moderate balloting with 30.39 percent.

Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nowgong and Barpeta are the other constituencies voting Thursday.

Polling for eight Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam has already been completed in two phases.

The first phase recorded over 78 percent of polling, while the second saw a turnout of over 75 percent.

Over 9.4 million voters are eligible to cast their votes in 11,998 polling stations across the six Lok Sabha constituencies.
