Leverkusen (Germany), April 26 (IANS): German football club Bayer Leverkusen have signed Salzburg coach Robert Schmidt for the upcoming Bundesliga season.
Schmidt is currently coaching the Austrian champions. The 47-year-old put pen to paper on a two-year deal to stay with the 'Werkself' until the end of June 2016. He will thus replace caretaker Sascha Lewandowski, reports Xinhua.
"We have chosen Roger Schmidt as the new coach among many possible alternatives. His game stands for aggressive, fast paced and offensively orientated football," Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Michael Schade said Friday.
Schmidt said he is looking forward to the new job.
"I am looking forward to this new task at a top club. I am happy to be able to work in the Bundesliga," Schmidt said.
Leverkusen are currently fourth in Bundesliga, a Champions League playoff spot, and will encounter second placed Dortmund Saturday.
