Amethi (UP), May 4 (PTI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday ruled out the possibility of offering support to “any front” after the Lok Sabha elections, with the conviction that the party would win enough seats to form the government.
Speaking to reporters in his Lok Sabha constituency of Amethi, the Congress vice-president said his party would not resort to “jod-tod” (mustering support in an unethical manner).
“We will neither form government with jod-tod, nor will we support any front after the polls.” He expressed confidence that the Congress would emerge victorious. “Hamare pure number ayenge. Aap dekhna (We will get full numbers. You will see),” Rahul said.
He also said that he was not perturbed by reports that BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi would be campaigning in Amethi. “Anyone can campaign. We are not worried. We have done a lot of work here.” When asked whether his sister Priyanka Gandhi should be given more responsibility in the party, the Congress leader said he would support whatever decision she made. Addressing a rally, he said his relationship with the people of Amethi was not “political” but one of “love and affection” and that he would never break it. “I shall dedicate my life to Amethi. I am here to share your problems and difficulties, unlike my opponents who are simply passers-by.”
The Congress leader took the opportunity to slam Modi on the Snoopgate episode. “Modi talks of empowering women and his police force chases a woman and taps her phone,” he said.
The Congress leader, who is facing a tough contest on his family turf, promised to do more for the constituency. “I have many plans for Amethi. The milk from the area now reaches Delhi. We will also set up a food park that will benefit people here,” he said.
Rahul acknowledged that problems remained but a lot of work had been done and more would be undertaken in the days to come.
