Nashik jailbreaker caught in Mahim

Mumbai, May 5 (MD): A jailbreaker who escaped from police custody in Sinnar, Nashik, was caught in Naya Nagar slums in Mahim. Rajesh Jaigopal Thakur, a native from Rajasthan and resident of Pune, had fled from custody on Friday after he was arrested in a motor vehicle theft case, under section 380 (theft) of Indian Penal Code.

The accused had dismantled the tiles of the roof of his lockup, and at 4 am on Saturday morning the constable at the station realised he had escaped. After spending the night at nearby farms, the 25-year-old came to Mumbai, where his wife was staying in Mahim. Thakur suspected that the police might carry out nakabandis to hunt for him.

The Sinnar police had sent information about the escapee, who has around 22 cases of theft against him, to other police stations. Sunil Deshmukh, ACP, Mahim division, said, “While patrolling we saw him roaming around suspiciously.

When we questioned him, we realised he is the jailbreaker. Thakur did not commit any crime in the city but has cases against him in Pune and Shirdi.” Sinnar police registered a case under Section 224 (Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of IPC.
