East Ukraine town cancels flights

Kiev, May 6 (IANS): Outgoing and incoming flights at Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine have been cancelled by the country's authorities until further notice, airport authorities said Tuesday.

The reasons for the suspension of flights were not detailed in the statement, but the escalating unrest in eastern Ukraine was possibly behind the move, Xinhua reported.

According to the statement, free re-booking would be allowed for all passengers travelling through the airport.

The suspension came after government troops launched an operation against pro-Russia militants in Sloviansk, a city 115 km north of Donetsk.

The operation is designed to reclaim the city, which has been under the control of pro-Russian militants since unrest began in eastern Ukraine.
