Eight killed in Nigeria road accident

Lagos, May 7 (IANS): Nigeria's road commission Wednesday said eight people died in a road accident on the Lokoja-Abuja road in the country's central north Kogi state.

State Commander for the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Godwin Omiko, told reporters in Lokoja, the state capital, that the accident involved a white Toyota passenger bus and a truck, Xinhua reported.

He said those killed included the driver and seven other occupants of the bus, and blamed the accident on human error.

Omiko said a passenger was seriously wounded in the accident, adding that the bodies and the injured passenger were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja.

According to him, investigation into the accident was under way.

Road accidents take place frequently in Nigeria due to reckless driving, bad road conditions and over packing. More than 1,000 are killed on roads each year in the country.
