Puttur, May 10: A shop dealing in helmets located at Uppinangady in the taluk was gutted due to accidental fire on Thursday May 8. The shop, located at Bank Road, belonged to Muhammed Ghouse.
It is said that fire was ignited in the shop early morning on Thursday due to electric short circuit. Helmets and various things connected with seating arrangements in vehicles, which had been stored inside the shop, were burnt down due to the fire which grew bigger with time. Mustafa and his famioly members, who reside near this shop, tried to douse the fire, after noticing it at around 5 am.
An industry dealing with cotton is located by the side of this shop. The possibility of the fire spreading to this shop gave rise to serious concerns, as controlling the fire would have turned very difficult. The fire brigade from Puttur was called. In the meanwhile, water from the storage tank of a nearby residential complex was pumped for extinguishing the raging flames. By the time the fire brigade arrived with equipment and personnel, the fire had died down.
Loss in this incident has been estimated at four lac rupees.
